Spread the word about Rosacea: 1 in 20 has it and most with it, don’t even know it!

This is the who, what, when, where, why, and how to treat Rosacea from The Free Dictionary:

Who: Women are more often affected, but it is generally more severe in men.

What: Rosacea is a skin disease characterized by the presence of redness, flushing, hard pimples, pus-filled pimples, and small varicose (spider-like) veins.

When: Typically the disease will appear during the 30’s and 40’s and presents as repeated episodes of flushing followed by consistent areas of redness and inflamed pimples. If the conditions continue, the skin can take on a roughened texture (similar to an orange peel) and, very late in the disorder, the face and/or nose may swell or deform into bulbous appearance.

Where: Primarily the face is affected. The areas that most see symptoms are the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin; however some find that they also have the disease on their neck, back, scalp, arms, and legs. About half of those with Rosacea will be affected in/around their eyes. This is called Ocular Rosacea and will often be present before any skin conditions.

Why: There is no known specific cause of Rosacea; however experts have presented some possible factors that include Celtic heritage (the diseases is most common in light-skinned, fair-haired women), and/or the presence of a bacterium, infectious agent or particular parasite.

How To Treat Rosacea:

    • – Reduce flushing triggers – alcoholic and hot beverages, spicy foods, and exposure to sunlight, heat, and cold.
    • – Oral antibiotics
    • – Vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) – prescription-strength, topical RetinA
