While limited in scope, breast augmentation has impressive range, allowing it to provide different things for different women. For women who desire larger breasts but wish to maintain a natural appearance, breast implant type, shape, and placement options can all assist in producing a look that is entirely in-line with existing curves and dimensions. When performed well, surgical and implant options may even make it impossible to tell that breast enlargement has taken place.
The board-certified plastic surgeons at Renaissance Plastic Surgery have decades of combined experience helping women in the St. Louis area improve breast size, shape, and dimension, and always strive to produce the exact look desired. Prior to your procedure, we will use the Vectra 3D Imaging System to give you a visual idea of what your results should look like. This enables us to go larger or smaller depending on your desires, helping us produce for you the look you find most complimentary to your frame.
Breast Implant Options
Breast implants come in round and teardrop shapes and can be filled with silicone, a cohesive gel, or saline, a saltwater solution. Silicone breast implants tend to feel more like natural breast tissue and, when shaped like a teardrop, may even be able to produce lifelike results when placed above muscles in the chest. Form stable implants, also known as “gummy bear breast implants” tend to feel the most natural and may offer the best results for women who are choosing above the muscle placement.
Breast implant placement can have a profound impact on the final look and feel of your augmentation procedure
Breast implants placed above the muscles in the chest (subglandular) may be suitable for women with enough breast tissue to cover the implant. This placement option can help reduce surgical time, but it does require enough natural breast tissue to ensure the implant is not visible underneath the skin. Implant shape and filling may help improve these results.
When implants are placed below the muscles (submuscular), their filing becomes less of an issue. Hidden underneath both muscle and natural breast tissue, these implants will be entirely obscured. Submuscular placement may be better for women who do not have enough natural breast tissue for subglandular placement, though several factors will go into determining which option is best for you.
During your initial consultation with one of our plastic surgeons, we can help you understand the benefits and limitations of all breast augmentation options, and guide you towards those that make the most sense for you.
Breast Augmentation with Fat Grafting
It is possible to improve breast size and shape through fat grafting – a technique that eliminates implants from augmentation entirely. When breast enhancement is performed with fat grafting, fat that has been taken from a suitable donor site – like the belly, back, or thighs – is cleaned and injected into the breasts to increase volume.
Breast augmentation with fat grafting will produce natural looking and feeling results, but they will not be as obvious as those obtained through enlargement with implants. As with all breast augmentation options, this can be discussed in greater detail during your initial consultation to help ensure you are making the best decision for your body.
