Deciding on breast augmentation can be exciting and overwhelming. From choosing the right implant to managing your recovery, there’s a lot of information and opinions out there—and it seems like the more you learn, the more questions you have. We here at Renaissance Plastic Surgery understand how difficult this process can be, which is why we wanted to take a few moments to go over what you need to know about breast augmentation surgery.

Breast Augmentation? We're Here to Help.

Choosing the Right Implant

Sure, breast augmentation is definitely about enhancing the size of your breasts, but it’s also about enhancing your entire figure. Your augmented breasts should look natural and complement your overall physical features, which is why choosing the proper breast implant is much more than just wanting to go up to a ‘C’ or ‘D’ cup. The size of your implants is a good place to start, but the shape, texture, and material will also have an impact on which implant is good for your specific situation. The size and shape of your chest, rib cage, and current breast size will also be taken into account when establishing what’s appropriate for you. We will evaluate all of these elements and find the implants that will work with your natural contours and look best on your unique body. And to ensure that we get it right, we offer Vectra 3D imaging so that you can get an idea of what your final outcome could possibly be before going under the knife!

Implant Placement—Above or Below

Your breast augmentation surgeon has options when it comes to the positioning of your implants. Depending on your particular needs, implants can either be placed above the chest muscle and under the breast tissue, known as a subglandular placement, or underneath the muscle, known as submuscular placement. A lot of women want their implants to be placed underneath the pectoral muscle whenever possible because it tends to feel more natural, and the implants may not interfere as much with mammograms or breastfeeding in the future.

The Augmentation Procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will begin by making strategically placed incisions in order to conceal any resulting scarring whenever possible. The chosen implants will be inserted and the incisions closed. The procedure generally takes about one to two hours to complete.

In addition to having their breasts enlarged, sometimes a  breast lift may be necessary and can be performed at the same time. Things like the aging process, gravity, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can cause your breasts to sag and lose volume. You can revitalize drooping breasts with a lift plus augmentation to restore your bust and your confidence.

Getting Back to Normal

Luckily, recovery from breast augmentation won’t put you out of action for very long. You’ll be scheduled with follow-up appointments to monitor your healing process. In about five to seven days, you can return to work and your normal routine with restrictions on lifting. Of course, you should put off more demanding movements until you’ve been given the green light by your surgeon.
