Heading into 2018, the top five plastic surgery procedures were:
- Breast augmentation
- Liposuction
- Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
- Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
- Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty)
1.8 million surgical cosmetic procedures were performed by board-certified plastic surgeons in 2017, marking a modest 1% increase over the year prior.
Non-surgical cosmetic treatments increased in popularity by 2% during that same time, with 15.7 million people seeking minimally invasive treatments. The top five most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments leading into 2018 were:
- BOTOX® Cosmetic
- Dermal fillers
- Chemical peel
- Laser hair removal
- Microdermabrasion
Full data for 2018 will be released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) as part of their annual plastic surgery trends as they become available.
Looking into the Future
While it is impossible to tell how frequently different procedures have been performed prior to actual numbers coming in, there were trends at the beginning of the year which may indicate which plastic surgery options see the largest jump in popularity in 2019.
According to the ASPS, plastic surgery procedures that saw the most significant leaps in popularity from 2016 to 2017 were:
- Calf augmentation (up 57%)
- Hair transplant (up 19%)
- Buttock lift (up 13%)
- Breast reduction (up 11%)
- Butt augmentation with fat grafting (up 10%)
If these upward trends are any indication, it is possible that these procedures eventually edge those more commonly thought of as “popular” out of the top five. However, breast augmentation has held the top spot for decades and was trending upward at the beginning of the year, likely allowing it to hold this ranking.
Heading into 2018, many nonsurgical treatments were trending upward as well. The five at the head of this surge were:
- Cellulite treatment (up 19%)
- Injection lipolysis (up 12%)
- Platelet Rich Plasma injections (PRP) (up 11%)
- Non-surgical skin tightening (up 9%)
- Non-invasive fat reduction (up 7%)
Injection lipolysis (Kybella®), non-surgical skin tightening (including ThermiVa®), and nonsurgical fat reduction (CoolSculpting®) have seen significant jumps in popularity since their respective introductions, becoming more popular than their surgical alternatives in recent years.
