Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Each year, 60 million Americans will struggle with active acne outbreaks—20 percent of whom are adults. Few of our patients at Renaissance Plastic Surgery are immune to acne and upwards of 95 percent of all men and women will experience acne at some point throughout our lives. Unfortunately, long after adolescence, and even after acne is gone, acne scars persist and remain as a constant reminder of past acne breakouts.

Acne scars can take a devastating toll on one’s complexions and many of our patient’s self-confidence is greatly affected. Of those who have struggled with acne, approximately 25 percent will have some sort of permanent acne scarring. Understandably, acne scars are one of the very top skin concerns amongst those who have them.

Fortunately, Bellafill®, a new injectable treatment at Renaissance Plastic Surgery, can make acne scars a worry of the past. Bellafill was the first (and remains the only) injectable filler to receive FDA approval for the treatment of acne scars.

Why Do Acne Scars Form?

Inflammation plays a leading role in the formation of scars of all kinds. While acne scars can be caused by a number of different factors, the most common cause is inflammation deep within the oil glands. Impacting our skin’s healing process, inflammation caused by acne disrupts the balance of collagen that occurs naturally within the skin. Collagen is like “scaffolding” for the skin and thus, when disrupted, irregularities like scarring can occur. For many, this results in atrophic acne scars that make the skin appear uneven, pitted, or pock-like. Acne scarring is known to affect the tone as well as the texture of the skin. While acne scars may fade over time, they often don’t go away completely without professional help.

Bellafill Restores Volume to Minimize Acne Scars

Bellafill is a dermal filler that takes advantage of remarkably small polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres that are suspended in a smooth collagen gel. Bellafill’s unique formulation works to minimize the appearance of acne scars in two distinct ways. First, Bellafill adds volume right away as the collagen gel subtly lifts the depressed skin of the acne scar to the level of the surrounding skin. Secondly, the PMMA microspheres stimulate and encourage your skin to produce and grow new collagen in treated area. The support from the microspheres give lasting improvement by restoring skin’s underlying structure as opposed to just temporarily filling it.
Treating Acne Scars with Bellafill Is Quick & Effective

Treating acne scars with Bellafill is as quick as it is effective. One of Renaissance Plastic Surgery’s experienced injectors will cleanse the treatment area before gently injecting a precise amount of filler just below the scar. A special numbing agent already formulated within the filler makes Bellafill a comfortable treatment for our patients here in St. Louis. The quick treatment should take no longer than half an hour, after which you are free to enjoy your day.

With Bellafill, our patients enjoy smoother skin for about one year. In clinical trials, 90 percent of patients with acne scarring were still satisfied with the results of their Bellafill treatment after 12 months.

Achieve the Best Results with a Personalized Treatment Plan

Bellafill is a unique new way to minimize otherwise hard to target acne scars. Bellafill can be used alone or in combination with other treatments. Acne scars are complex and require a personalized treatment plan that is unique to your needs. We also perform a number of other treatments at Renaissance Plastic Surgery that can help with residual acne scarring, including microneedling with MicroPen®, targeted chemical peels, and laser resurfacing treatments such as ProFractional™ and Halo™.
